Visiting Deal & Walmer
Directions
By Road
From all points of the UK you will approach Deal on the M20 to Folkestone or M2 to Canterbury. Even from the Dartford Crossing traffic conditions can make the M20 a better choice then the M2, there is very little in it. At Folkestone stay on the A20 through to Dover until you get to the roundabout in front of the Eastern Docks where Deal is signposted as a right turn up Jubilee Way over the docks. At the top of the hill turn right at the roundabout onto the A258 which leads you directly into town and enters the map at the bottom. From the M2 stay on the A2 past Canterbury which will lead you to the same roundabout by the Duke of York pub, where Deal is signposted as a left turn. Beware some satellite navigation systems set to shortest route will instruct you to turn off too early through some narrow lanes. This is not recommended unless you have time for a country drive. An alternate route from the M2 is to turn off for Canterbury and follow the city ring road until Sandwich A257 is signposted as a roundabout right turn then left at the traffic lights. Just before Sandwich, Deal will be signposted a right turn at the A256 roundabout which leads you to the A258 two roundabouts on which in turn brings you into Deal from the other direction, entering the map in the top left corner.
From Thanet follow road signs for A256 Sandwich and then take its bypass until you get to the A258 as above. From Herne Bay head towards Ramsgate on the A299 and then as above and from Whitstable head for Canterbury and then follow the alternate route directions above. Driving time from the M25 is usually just over 1 hour and from Thanet about 30 minutes. From Europe, Eurotunnel is an alternative to the ferries below and if you are careful to follow the signs for Folkestone when exiting the terminal it is about 30 minutes from Deal following the directions from M20 above.
National Express coaches run twice daily from London Victoria. Stagecoach buses run from Canterbury via Sandwich and from Dover from where connections to other parts of Kent are available. They also run local buses within the town.
By Train
Deal and Walmer stations are served by the same trains on the same line between Dover and Ramsgate, leaving from London Charing Cross. There is at least one train an hour during weekday off peak periods. From north west Kent the London Victoria line goes to Dover where you can change for Deal, or occasionally connection timings may make it advantageous to use the Ramsgate half of the same train after Faversham and arrive in Deal from the opposite direction. Passengers from north east Kent will have to also change at Ramsgate although some trains run trough from Margate. Eurostar passengers from the continent should select a train for Ashford International and change there onto the Charing Cross line for Deal.
By Sea
The ferries of P&O and Seafrance from Calais and Norfolk Line from Dunkerque operate frequently to Dover Eastern Docks. At the dock exit use the left hand lane to turn onto Jubilee Way and then follow the road directions above.Trans Europa Ferries operate from Ostend to Ramsgate from which it takes about 30 minutes following the directions from Thanet above. Marina facilities for private yachts are available at Dover and Ramsgate.
By Air
London’s international airports are the closest available for commercial flights. Private aircraft can be accommodated at Kent International Airport 12 miles north of Deal at Manston.
